Supporting LGBTI youth

Release of 'Inside Out' resource

Inside Out was produced through a collaboration between Rainbow Youth, Curative and CORE Education (the collaboration) using a co-design process which involved 75 young people.

The resource is designed for use in classrooms, to increase understanding of and support for sex, gender and sexual diversity. It is also suitable for use in community forums for young people. The resource challenges unhelpful social norms and encourages critical thinking to foster an environment where all young people belong.

Inside Out is designed to support objectives of the NZ curriculum including the health curriculum, and help schools respond to the new Sexual Health Guidelines released by the Ministry of Education in May 2015.

The resource consists of video clips, supported by teaching resources, a website and training workshops for users.  Rainbow Youth is working in partnership with local organisations to provide training to ensure safe use of the resource and increase local capability and ownership.

Release of Supporting LGBTI Young People in New Zealand

On 14 November 2015, Hon Nikki Kaye, the Minister for Youth, released the cross-agency response Supporting LGBTI Young People in New Zealand, alongside $150,000 to support the LGBTI youth sector.

The response follows the Ministry of Youth Development-led consultation that took place across the LGBTI community and highlights key work underway across government that supports LGBTI young people.

It is the start of an important conversation about ways that government can continue to support LGBTI young people in New Zealand.
